AI and SEO – friend or foe?

2 minutes read / SEO

As a population, we’ve long been paranoid about robots taking our jobs. Cast your mind back to 2004 and ‘I, Robot’ gave us a glimpse into a world where highly intelligent robots would take on public service jobs in a bid to make our lives easier. If you’ve seen the movie, you know Will Smith isn’t convinced – and then, in true movie style, the robots try to take over and kill everyone and it all goes horribly wrong.

But, nearly 15 years later, are we still resistant to artificial intelligence? Well, the answer is no. Whether you think you are or not, AI has begun to infiltrate tons of things that we do and use every day – from machine learning in things like Siri to speech recognition, and even recommendations on Netflix.

So now that it seems that AI isn’t out to kill us (yet), how can you use it to your SEO advantage?

Making the robots your friends

Ok, so I know AI isn’t technically ‘robots’. But for the sake of fun, let’s pretend they are. There are tons of ways that robots can make your digital lives easier – and you can apply this to your business, too.

When it comes to digital marketing, using AI can mean that you get more bang for your buck. Here are a few ways that AI can help you with your digital strategy:

  • Personalisation – AI and machine learning can help you tailor your messaging based on the way a user has behaved, offering a personal experience.
  • Content ideation – You can use techie tools to identify trending topics and gaps, and use these to come up with content titles that will help you stand out.
  • Real time performance – Using AI can help you to process data and spot quick wins or issues, allowing you to take action immediately.

Have we won you over yet? Well, before you make the leap into integrating artificial intelligence into everything you do, you need to work out if it’s actually going to benefit you. You don’t want the robots taking over for no reason, after all.

What do you need to know?

If you’re thinking about whether or not you should use AI, there are some questions that you should ask yourself to work out if, and how, this kind of technology could benefit you and your business.

First of all, think about what the benefit is – will it save you time, or make you more efficient? Also think about how the tech you’re looking at works. Is the data fresh and accurate? How sophisticated is it? How are you able to interpret the findings it collects, or use the data produced? And finally, think about your business and the way it works – what business problem will AI solve for you?

While AI can be an amazing tool for digital marketers and online businesses, you want to make sure that it’s worth the effort.

The pipe dreams

If we look at the big picture and have a go at predicting the future, then some experts are saying that we could see a time when AI will take over the content industry. In fact, we’re actually seeing some steps in this direction already. The Associated Press reportedly uses algorithms to write over 3,000 articles every three months, but quite how this content model would be replicated on a mass scale, and whether it will replace real people, is another story. For now, anyway.

There are also some amazing developments in the world of real time data thanks to the use of AI, which, if continued, could see search term strategy changing over the next couple of years – particularly if developments are made around instantaneously updating responses and search terms.

One thing’s for sure, the future’s an exciting looking place in the digital world. Want to talk more about robots and the future of your website? We’re your guys. Get in touch today.
