5 easy ways to improve your SEO

New website? Well, the next step is to start getting traffic to it. How? Search Engine Optimisation. Don’t worry – it’s not as scary as it seems, trust us.

No matter how little you know about SEO, there are many simple changes you can make right away to start reaping the benefits of it. Here are five easy ways you can improve your SEO, today.

1. Sign up to Google Search Console (previously Webmaster Tools)

If you don’t have an account yet, you can make one here, for free.

In Search Console, you will be able to monitor and maintain your website’s presence in Google search results. It gives you access to what keyword searches on Google led to your site being listed in SERPs, click-through rates, and lists of internal and external pages that link to your site. Along with lots of other technical tools that allow you to check your indexing status, submit and check a sitemap, write a robots.txt file and more.

2. Metadata

Very simple, yet very effective. Metadata consists of a page title, description and keywords known as the title tag, meta description and meta keywords.

The page title tag is the text you’ll see at the top of your browser, and in search results. The meta description is a brief description of the page, often used as the snippet shown up in SERPs (search engine results pages). Finally, meta keywords are a series of keywords you feel are relevant to that particular page.

Within your metadata, make sure you include your keyword(s) but avoid ‘keyword stuffing’- they need to make sense. Utilising metadata alone could have a drastic effect on your rankings.

3. Use alt tags

Always make sure you describe your image and video content using alt tags.

Search engines may be able to read text on a website brilliantly, but they can’t quite figure out how to ‘read’ an image or video just yet. Search engines will use the alt tag (that you have written) to understand what is being displayed in an image or video, allowing them to index it accurately.

4. Invest time in content

Search engines, especially Google, love content. Not just any old content though; it must be informative, “fresh” and accurate. The more often you update your content, the more accurate search engines will assume it is – which in turn will improve your rankings.

Ultimately, search engines want to offer users the best and most relevant search results based on their query. So, if your website features tons of fresh, unique content that’s answering searcher’s questions, then you’re onto a winner.

5. URL’s

When it comes to choosing a page URL, make sure it is relevant, includes keywords or key phrases (usually the title of the page), and isn’t too long. Anything above 100+ characters would probably be worth rewriting.
