How important is a logo?
A logo is a design, often small in nature, that symbolises your business and products, making it easily recognisable by consumers and clients. Logogeek explain how a logo is basically a “graphic representation of your brand’s identity”.
A logo is important because it will differentiate you from your competitors, and will “express a company’s values”, according to Professor Robert Jones at the University of East Anglia, in an interview with the BBC.
Take a moment to think of all the logos you can, off the top of your head, and name what company they are.
Now you have thought of some, isn’t it amazing how much impact even the simplest and smallest of logo’s can have on your business?
Surely you want the same for your business, no matter what size your company is?
Creating a logo
To provide a visual presence in the customer’s mind, Sagi Haviv, (a partner at the graphic design firm, Chermayeff & Geismer & Haviv (CGH) in New York) who was interviewed by the BBC, explains there are four key aspects that help make a good business logo.
These are;
- The appropriateness to the business
- Its memorability
- It should be uncomplicated in form (design)
- The logo and concept needs to be original
General advice for creating a good quality, memorable logo is to take your time, create something simple, and a design that people can easily recognise and relate to your business.
It doesn’t have to be fancy, and more often than not, the simpler the design the more popular and memorable it becomes. For example, think of Apple, McDonalds and Nike logos – their logos aren’t lavish, they are an apple, a letter M and a tick – all extremely simple, but very effective and recognised globally.
Even if you already have a logo, that doesn’t mean you can’t change it. Many famous brands over the years have slightly tweaked theirs, or changed it completely, and have seen nothing but success from it.
If you decide to change your logo then remember to design it with the pointers above guiding you, as they don’t only apply for first time logo designs. Do bear in mind how it could affect your consumers perception of your brand. If it’s rushed it probably won’t be right, and may end up having an adverse effect on your company’s image.
So we now understand how important a logo is to a company, what to remember when designing one and that consumer perception is vital. However, what is vital to remember is that a logo can only be successful and go the distance if the company behind it is respected and trusted by their clients and consumers. Don’t expect it to solely build respect for your brand by itself. A great logo is just one of the aspects required for any successful business.
